TRUST THE PROCESS

Have you ever felt like your body is holding stories your mind hasn’t spoken yet?
You can’t find the words

But you need to express these stories

Have you ever felt like your body is holding stories your mind hasn’t spoken yet?

You can’t find the words

You don’t even have the words

But you need to express these stories

While looking for a way to express my ‘unspoken’ stories, I came across healing through expression in the form of Creative Arts therapy.

But what is this therapy that allows me to speak through colour, art, sound, music and movement, that offers a different path to healing? This approach offered me the opportunity to explore an inner world in ways that felt natural, expressive, and deeply authentic and human.

Creative arts therapy is an umbrella term for therapeutic practices that use artistic expression as a primary tool for healing. This can include art therapy (drawing, painting, sculpting), music therapy (listening, composing, performing), drama therapy (role-play and storytelling), and dance or movement therapy.

Creative arts and movement therapies are increasingly supported by research, particularly in areas like trauma, anxiety, and neurological health. While they may feel unconventional, they are often used alongside traditional therapies to provide a more holistic approach to well-being.

So often at Broken to Brilliant, I hear, ’Trust the Process’ In Creative Arts Therapy, the focus isn’t on artistic skill or performance, it’s about the process. It’s how doing something with a mind-body connection can help you explore emotions, process experiences, and gain insight into yourself.

How it works

Creative and movement therapies work in ways that go beyond traditional talk therapy:

  • Nonverbal expression: Sometimes feelings are too complex or overwhelming to put into words. Art and movement provide alternative ways to communicate.

  • Mind-body connection: Emotional experiences are often held in the body. Movement can help release this tension and restore balance.

  • Symbolic exploration: Creating art allows people to express difficult or abstract emotions indirectly, making them easier to process.

  • Emotional regulation: Rhythm, repetition, and creative flow can help calm the nervous system or boost energy levels.

Movement therapy

Movement therapy, specifically, often referred to as dance/movement therapy, centres on the powerful connection between the body and mind. It’s based on the idea that our physical movements reflect our emotional state and that by moving differently, we can express our emotions, acknowledging what we feel and influence how we feel

In our Movement and Art Workshop, there are no structured dance routines, no performances, not even for the small group. Sessions may involve guided or free-form movement. This helps individuals become more aware of their bodies and release stored tension or emotions. The environment is supportive and non-judgmental, allowing you to express yourself freely.

How this will help you:

Creative Arts therapies can support a wide range of emotional and mental health needs, including:

  • Reducing stress and anxiety

  • Supporting trauma recovery

  • Improving mood and managing depression

  • Increasing self-awareness and confidence

  • Strengthening the connection between mind and body.

Many people also find that these approaches help them feel more grounded, present, and connected to themselves.

Who is this for

One of the things I love about this type of therapy is that they are highly adaptable and can benefit people of all ages and backgrounds. They are especially helpful for:

  • Adults navigating stress, trauma, or major life changes

  • Children who may struggle to express themselves verbally

  • Individuals with disabilities or neurological conditions

  • Anyone seeking a more experiential, less language-based form of therapy.

But the best thing is you don’t have to be good at any of it. No prior experience with art, music, or dance is ever required. You just have to be willing to ‘trust the process

About the session

Sessions will vary, using a variety of modalities, different themes, and producing a personal outcome. You may:

  • Create artwork based on a theme or emotion

  • Engage in guided or spontaneous movement

  • Use music to explore different feelings

  • Reflect on your experience through gentle discussion

  • Do some breathe work or meditation.

Healing through creative arts and movement

Creative arts and movement therapy remind us that healing doesn’t always have to come through conversation. Sometimes, it comes through a brushstroke, a rhythm, or a simple movement of the body.

Being able to introduce our Creative Rebuilding: Movement Arts Therapy Workshops to the Broken to Brilliant programs this year was a dream come true.

By ‘trusting the process’ and engaging both the mind and body, with music and creativity, these therapies can open up new pathways for understanding, managing past trauma, emotional release, healing and growth.

Look forward to seeing you where movement, music and colour combine.
