GROW: Nurturing Healing Through the Power of Plants

There is a unique kind of magic that happens when you press your hands into cool, dark earth. For survivors of domestic violence, this simple act can be the first step toward reclaiming a sense of peace and personal power.

We are so proud to share the impact of our recent GROW program: Gardening for Recovery, Opportunity, and Wellbeing. Designed as a holistic Garden Therapy initiative, GROW guides participants through a four-workshop journey that blends the art of horticulture with the science of mindfulness.

Why the Garden Heals

The transformation we see in our GROW Workshops isn't just anecdotal; it’s rooted in psychological and physiological science. For those recovering from trauma, nature offers a safe container for healing.

  • Stress Relief & Purpose: Nurturing a plant from a tiny seed to a thriving bloom is a meditative process. It provides a tangible sense of accomplishment, helping to ground the mind and quiet the noise of anxiety.

  • A Natural Rhythm: Trauma often feels chaotic. Working with the soil connects us to the steady, predictable rhythms of nature, which provides a stabilising and calming effect on the nervous system.

  • The Mind-Body Connection: Gardening is a form of low-impact exercise. The gentle, purposeful movements of digging, planting, and weeding engage the body, releasing tension and fostering a healthy physical connection to the world.

Our Journey: From Succulents to Sun-Seekers

Over the course of four inspiring months, our participants didn't just grow plants-they cultivated resilience.

More Than Just Planting

The GROW program was built on four "Intentional Pillars"

designed to help survivors reconnect with themselves:

  1. Achievement: Promoting a wonderful sense of achievement by creating and caring for plants in their own pots.

  2. Grounding: We used the garden as a living classroom for mindfulness and breathing exercises, which are vital tools for emotional self-regulation.

  3. Sensory Engagement: The tactile feel of potting mix and the varied textures of leaves provide a "bottom-up" approach to calming the brain.

  4. Responsibility: By caring for a living thing, participants rediscovered their own capacity to nurture and protect life.

Every session concluded with a guided meditation and reflection period, allowing participants to process their experience and find the parallels between the hardy plants in their pots and the strength within themselves.

"To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow."

The Impact: Growth by the Numbers

The success of GROW isn't just measured in blooms, but in the community that took root during these sessions. We are so encouraged by the engagement of everyone involved:

  • 24 Participants enrolled in the GROW journey, with a dedicated 21 attending the workshops to dig in and learn.

  •  4 Heartfelt Volunteers gave their time and energy across all four sessions to ensure every participant felt supported.

Path to Re-connection

It is our deepest hope that this horticultural journey has provided a safe, multi-sensory path to healing. The peaceful, natural rhythms of nurturing life beautifully mirror exactly what the nervous system needs to re-regulate after trauma.

Like us, we know our participants will feel an immense sense of satisfaction as they watch their herbs, vegetables, and flowers continue to flourish at home. A living reminder of their own growth and the pride of saying, "I grew this myself."

A Special Thank You

This program blossomed thanks to the incredible generosity of our community. We want to extend a huge thank you to Bunnings Lawnton. Their donation of materials and plants made these projects possible and provided the literal seeds for this healing journey.
