Cultivating Brilliance Speakers: Empowering Survivors during 16 Days of Activism

Updated: Nov 20, 2023

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is

an annual international campaign that shines a light on the issue of violence against women. It runs from November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to December 10th, Human Rights Day. Broken to Brilliant, an Australian registered not-for-profit charity founded by domestic violence survivors, plays a crucial role in supporting survivors on their journey to recovery, healing, and rebuilding their lives. One of our initiatives is the Cultivating Brilliance Survivor Series, where guest speakers from various backgrounds share their insights, knowledge, and personal experiences to empower domestic violence survivors. In this blog post, we'll introduce you to some of the incredible guest speakers who have been part of this series and the speakers coming up during the 16 Days of Activism.

Cultivating Brilliance: Empowering Survivors

In 2021, the Broken to Brilliant Research and Education Committee launched the Cultivating Brilliance Survivor Series, an empowering online educational initiative that invites guest speakers to present ways for domestic violence survivors to heal, recover, and rebuild their lives. The aim is to help SHAPE the path that lies ahead for domestic violence survivors. The guest speakers share their insights, professional knowledge, and personal experiences to provide Support, Hope, Assistance, Practical tools and empowerment. These sessions are held online during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. The speakers generously donate their time and expertise to help survivors rebuild their lives after domestic violence. These sessions provide valuable insights and practical tools for survivors to shape their economic future, overcome obstacles, and achieve personal and professional growth.

Brilliance Wheel powered by stories.

When we invite speakers to join our Cultivating Brilliance Survivor Series, we encourage them to link their presentations to our powerful framework, the Broken to Brilliant - Brilliance Wheel. This wheel is the result of our research and a deep understanding of the journey from fear and trauma to happy and fulfilling lives for domestic violence survivors.

This framework is based on the wisdom we've gained from the first three books we've published – 'Broken to Brilliant,' 'Terror to Triumph,' and 'Shattered to Shining.' Within these 96,000 words lie the stories of domestic violence survivors who have courageously shared their journeys. From these stories, we identified the top 10 themes for domestic violence survivor recovery, which were presented at the 2019 Stop Domestic Violence conference (see diagram 2). These themes serve as the foundation for our Mentorship program and provide a roadmap for survivors.

The top ten themes we've identified are:

1. Lifelong Learning

2. Self-Knowledge

3. Supports

4. Safe Nurturing Home

5. Financial Fitness

6. Designing the Future

7. Physical Health

8. Meaningful Connections

9. Spiritual Growth

10. Personal Growth

These themes represent the key aspects of a survivor's journey from trauma to triumph. When we ask our guest speakers to connect their presentations to these themes, we are ensuring that the knowledge and insights they provide align with the fundamental elements of recovery. This approach not only enriches our Cultivating Brilliance Survivor Series but also empowers survivors with practical tools and guidance that are rooted in the experiences and research we've gathered over the years.
